Short answer: the SpringWell SS salt-based softener (from about $1,512 for the SS1) is a solid, high-flow softener with a lifetime warranty on tanks and valves, but it costs about twice as much as a certified Whirlpool WHES48 (about $680 to $930) and has no NSF/ANSI 44 certification as a system. The salt-free SpringWell FutureSoft (from about $1,680) reduces scale but doesn’t soften. Buy SpringWell if you want high flow, an app and a long warranty from one online seller. Skip it if certification or the lowest price matters most.

We didn’t install a SpringWell system ourselves. This review is by the numbers: published specs, prices on SpringWell’s site in late October 2026, the full warranty and return terms, certification directory checks by third parties, and patterns in owner and reviewer feedback, summarized in our own words with sources.

Who SpringWell is

SpringWell was founded in 2018 and sells whole-house filters and softeners direct to consumers online. In February 2024, Fortune Brands Innovations, the parent company of Moen, bought it for about $105 million. You can now see that on SpringWell’s site, which sells Moen reverse osmosis systems and the Flo by Moen leak monitor alongside its own gear. SpringWell says its systems are made in the U.S.

SpringWell SS salt-based softener

The SS is a standard ion exchange softener: resin swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, then regenerates with brine. It’s the only SpringWell product that actually removes hardness. SpringWell recommends it for water above 7 gpg.

Specs

All three sizes have 1-inch connections, run at 25 to 80 psi and 36 to 120°F, and handle pH 6.5 to 10. Resin tanks are 9 x 48 inches (SS1), 10 x 54 (SS4) and 13 x 54 (SS+), and every size uses an 18 x 33-inch round brine tank. Flow is the standout: 11 to 20 gpm is high for a residential softener, so pressure holds up with several fixtures running.

Valve and Bluetooth app

The control head is metered, so it regenerates based on water use rather than a timer. You set it up and check it through SpringWell’s app over Bluetooth, which means you need to be near the unit; it isn’t Wi-Fi. SpringWell doesn’t say who makes the valve, and Mid Atlantic Water notes it isn’t sold as a Fleck or Clack, the two valves most water shops service.

Resin

SpringWell’s current page doesn’t name the resin grade or volume. Water Filter Guru, which bought and installed an SS1, reports premium 10% crosslink resin preloaded in the tank, which resists chlorine better than standard 8% resin. Quality Water Lab estimates resin life at about 8 years.

Sizing

Size by grains, not just bathrooms. A family of four using 300 gallons a day at 15 gpg removes 4,500 grains a day, so an SS1 (32,000 grains) regenerates about once a week. The same family at 25 gpg should step up to the SS4. SpringWell doesn’t publish salt efficiency at different salt settings, so you can’t tell how much capacity you get at an economical salt dose. Our water softener size calculator runs the math.

SpringWell FutureSoft salt-free conditioner

FutureSoft uses template-assisted crystallization (TAC) to turn hardness into tiny crystals that stick less as scale. It needs no salt, drain or power, and it includes a 5-micron sediment pre-filter. SpringWell rates the media for 5 or more years and lists hardness up to 75 gpg, with zero iron and manganese and pH 7.0 to 9.5.

Be clear on what it does. SpringWell itself says FutureSoft won’t make water feel slick or stop spotting. TapWaterData found no NSF, IAPMO or WQA listing for it in August 2026, and SpringWell publishes no test behind its “up to 95%” scale claim. We compare it with other options in our best salt-free water softeners guide.

Softener and filter combos

The CSS combo pairs SpringWell’s CF city-water filter with an SS softener: CSS1 (CF1 + SS1), CSS4 and CSS+. The CF tank uses KDF and catalytic carbon for chlorine and chloramine, and SpringWell also claims PFAS reduction without citing a certification. The filter is placed first, which helps protect softener resin from chlorine.

SpringWell gives mixed figures for carbon life: 10 years or 1 million gallons on the combo page, 5 years or 1 million gallons in its site summary, and a 6-year guarantee on its warranty page. Plan on 5 to 6 years. The CF1 filter alone was about $1,160 in September 2026. For wells, a separate well filter plus softener combo starts at $2,940 ($200 less than buying both separately). SpringWell also sells a salt-free combo (CF + FutureSoft) and a newer single-tank “2-in-1” filter and softener.

Real price and what’s in the box

SpringWell listed the SS1 from $1,512 in late October 2026, with a “20% off all systems” banner on the site. Prices move: third-party snapshots put the SS1 at about $1,530 in 2024 and $1,800 in February 2026. A bypass valve ($58.79) is added to your cart by default; remove it only if you already have one. Shipping is free in the U.S.

The SS box includes the resin tank, brine tank, electronic head, power supply, drain line, hose clamp and MNPT fittings. A sediment pre-filter is not included. Water Filter Guru reports plastic fittings, which its plumber suggested swapping for brass. You’ll need a nearby outlet that isn’t on a switch and a drain.

Installation is DIY-friendly if you can cut into your main line. Water Filter Guru estimates $200 to $400 for a plumber. For full budgets including salt, see our water softener cost guide.

Warranty and 6-month guarantee: the fine print

Certifications: components vs. system

SpringWell says its systems use “certified components” but doesn’t name the standards. TapWaterData checked the NSF, IAPMO and WQA directories in August 2026 and found no listing for the SS1 or FutureSoft, and Mid Atlantic Water reported the same for NSF and WQA in October 2026. That means no NSF/ANSI 44 certification for hardness reduction or salt efficiency. By comparison, the Whirlpool WHES48 is NSF-certified for hardness reduction and efficiency, and the US Water Systems Matrixx valve carries a WQA Gold Seal. Certification doesn’t prove a SpringWell won’t work; it means you’re relying on SpringWell’s own numbers.

What owners and reviewers praise and complain about

Ratings on SpringWell’s own site are high (4.8 for the SS and 4.6 for the combos across hundreds of reviews), but those are hosted by the seller. Independent feedback is thin. SpringWell’s Trustpilot page had only two reviews and a 2.9 score in October 2026, and Trustpilot notes the profile is unclaimed. We couldn’t find a BBB profile under the SpringWell name.

Common praise: Water Filter Guru measured hardness drop from about 13.7 gpg to 0.3 gpg on its SS1 and liked the app and regeneration efficiency. Quality Water Lab reports no noticeable pressure drop with several fixtures running, and positive ComplaintsBoard reviews cite helpful chat support, installation videos and installer referrals.

Common complaints: price, a heavy box, plastic fittings, incomplete instructions and uneven tech support (Water Filter Guru); no pre-filter in the box; and unanswered emails. The one formal ComplaintsBoard complaint (2023) involved a salt-free system that the owner said left crystal buildup in a water heater. A 2025 Trustpilot reviewer canceled after being told a paid water test was required first. A competing dealer, Mid Atlantic Water, reports a well-water owner whose problems returned after two years, though the model and water test weren’t known.

Whirlpool WHES48: half the price, certified, and sold at home centers. Its flow and warranty are weaker, and parts come only from Whirlpool. Fleck 5600SXT kits: cheaper, and almost any water shop can fix the valve, but kit quality depends on the seller. US Water Systems Matrixx: the closest direct-sold rival, with a certified valve, published resin specs and an honest “optimal” capacity rating, for a similar price. Dealers like Culligan and Kinetico cost more but include a water test, installation and local service; see our Kinetico review and Culligan cost guide. Weighing SpringWell against Aquasana? Who should buy it, and who shouldn’t

Buy a SpringWell SS if you have a larger home that needs high flow, you want to buy a softener and carbon filter from one company, you plan to stay in the house (the warranty doesn’t follow the system), and you’re comfortable with DIY or hiring a plumber.

Skip it if you want NSF/ANSI 44 certification, the lowest price, a valve any local shop can service, or a real installed trial. Also skip it, or add iron treatment first, if your well has iron, manganese or sulfur. And don’t buy FutureSoft expecting soft water; it’s a scale conditioner.

FAQ

Is SpringWell NSF certified?

Not as a softener system. SpringWell cites certified components, but third-party directory checks in 2026 found no NSF, IAPMO or WQA listing for its SS softener or FutureSoft conditioner.

How much does a SpringWell water softener cost?

The SS1 started at $1,512 on SpringWell’s site in late October 2026, and larger sizes cost more. FutureSoft starts at about $1,680. Add a plumber ($200 to $400) if you don’t install it yourself, plus salt for the SS.

Can I return a SpringWell softener after installing it?

Generally no. The 6-month money-back guarantee applies to unused, uninstalled systems in original packaging, with a 10% restocking fee. Installed systems are returnable only if SpringWell finds them defective.

Does SpringWell work on well water?

Only if the water is free of iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide or you pre-treat it. Using a softener on out-of-spec water voids the warranty. SpringWell sells well filter and softener combos for this.

Who owns SpringWell?

Fortune Brands Innovations, Moen’s parent company, which bought SpringWell in February 2024 for about $105 million.
