Short answer: a Culligan water softener usually costs about $1,800 to $6,500 installed, according to Modernize. Its model ranges run from about $1,800 to $2,300 for the entry-level Aquasential Select to $3,500 to $4,100 for the Aquasential Smart High Efficiency, and $4,500 to $6,500 for a twin-tank system. Renting costs about $25 to $100 a month. Over 10 years, a purchased Culligan with a service plan comes to about $7,350 in our example, compared with about $2,900 for a DIY home-center softener and about $4,325 for a direct-sold system like SpringWell or US Water Systems Matrixx installed by a plumber.
Culligan sells through independently owned local dealers and doesn’t publish national prices, so no single number is “the” Culligan price. We didn’t request quotes or install a system ourselves. Instead, we built these ranges by the numbers from published cost guides (Modernize, Best Company), Culligan’s own product and offer pages, local dealer pages, and customer-reported quotes compiled by TapWaterData, as of late October 2026. We use the same household and cost assumptions as our water softener cost guide.

Why Culligan prices vary so much
Culligan dealers set their own prices. A quote usually comes after a free water test, in person, by video or by phone, and it bundles the softener, installation, and often extras like a drinking water system or a carbon filter for chlorine. That’s why two neighbors can get quotes thousands of dollars apart.
The reported quotes show how wide the spread is. TapWaterData’s 10 customer-reported softener purchases from 2024 to 2026 ranged from $3,224 to $11,896, with a median of $5,750. Best Company’s broader estimate is $800 to $5,000 for the equipment alone, with installation from $200 for a simple swap to $3,000 for a complex job, though Culligan dealers often include installation in the price.
Culligan softener models and what they cost
Culligan’s current softener lineup, as listed on its site in October 2026, includes the Select and Select Plus series, the Advantage, and the Aquasential Smart High Efficiency (Smart HE) family. Culligan also promotes a model it calls the HE Water Softener.
Select, Select Plus and Advantage: entry level
These are Culligan’s simpler softeners. Modernize puts the Aquasential Select series at $1,800 to $2,300 installed, and one California forum poster reported $3,700 for a Select Plus in 2026. Per the warranty terms TapWaterData summarizes, the resin is covered for life, the tank, valve body and brine parts for 10 years, the circuit board and meter for 5 years, and the entire softener for 1 year.
HE (High Efficiency): mid-range
Modernize lists the High Efficiency series at $3,200 to $3,600 installed. In late 2026, Culligan’s national site advertised getting started with the HE Water Softener for $9.95 a month for the first three months. The page doesn’t say what the price is after that, whether it’s a rental or a purchase, or the contract length, and it notes that dealer participation varies. Ask your dealer for the full monthly price and term in writing.
Aquasential Smart HE: top of the line
Modernize puts the Smart HE at $3,500 to $4,100 installed. It’s the most documented Culligan model. Culligan says it’s tested and certified by WQA to NSF/ANSI 44 (softener performance), NSF/ANSI 372 (lead-free materials) and CSA B483.1, for hardness, barium and radium 226/228 reduction. It comes in 9-, 10-, 12- and 14-inch resin tank sizes, and variants include a Municipal version with chlorine filtration, a Softener-Cleer version for iron, and a Twin version with two resin tanks.
Culligan claims operating costs up to 46% lower, but the footnote says that’s compared with a time-clock softener and only with the optional Aqua-Sensor. The warranty covers the tank and resin for life, the circuit board, valve body and brine parts for 10 years, the meter and sensors for 5 years, and the whole unit for 1 year. Wi-Fi monitoring through the Culligan Connect app sends salt and error alerts. Bob Vila’s reviewer, who was supplied a unit by Culligan, reported an installed range of $2,500 to $5,500 for her New York home.
Older lines and Aqua-Cleer
You may see older names such as the Gold Series or Medallist Series on existing installs, used listings or older quotes. They don’t appear on Culligan’s current softener page, so confirm what’s being offered. Aqua-Cleer is Culligan’s reverse osmosis drinking water line, not a softener. Modernize puts an RO add-on at $1,000 to $3,000. For comparison, our best reverse osmosis systems list certified under-sink units for about $200 to $800.
Buy, rent or finance?
Culligan offers all three, but the terms come from your local dealer.
- Buy: you pay the installed price up front and own the system. Culligan advertises a 30-day satisfaction guarantee: if you’re unhappy within 30 days, it says it will remove the product and refund the purchase price, subject to dealer participation.
- Rent: Modernize puts rentals at $25 to $100 a month, often including service and salt delivery, but notes they often require multi-year agreements. Advertised dealer starting prices we found ran $32 to $55 a month; a Nevada dealer listed $45 a month plus a $249 install fee. Customers on BBB have reported paying close to $100 a month with salt and service.
- Finance or rent-to-own: Culligan describes financing with little or no money down and ownership at the end, and some dealers offer rent-to-own. No rates or terms are published.
Renting makes sense for a short stay or a rental home. Over 10 years, though, $45 to $100 a month adds up to $5,400 to $12,000 in rent alone, more than most purchased systems. If you sign a contract at home, the FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule generally gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel a covered sale of $25 or more.
Ongoing costs: salt delivery, service and repairs
Salt delivery is convenient but pricey. Modernize puts Culligan salt refills at $20 to $50 a month, or $240 to $600 a year. In our cost guide’s example (a family of four using 300 gallons a day with 15 grains per gallon of hardness), a softener meeting the NSF/ANSI 44 efficiency minimum uses about 12 bags a year, about $100 if you buy and pour it yourself.
Service plans are the other big line. Modernize lists Culligan maintenance plans at about $50 to $70 a month. That’s far above the $100 to $300 a year HomeGuide lists for softener maintenance in general. Our 10-year example uses $200 a year, so a monthly plan would raise the total a lot. Ask exactly what the plan covers that the warranty doesn’t.
Repairs and cleaning: Modernize puts a system cleaning at $100 to $200 every few years. Culligan’s long resin and tank warranties help, but the whole-unit coverage on current models is 1 year, so labor and service calls after that may cost extra unless a plan covers them.
Can you buy a Culligan softener at Home Depot or Lowe’s?
We couldn’t find a Culligan-branded water softener sold off the shelf at Home Depot or Lowe’s in October 2026. What you’ll find under the Culligan name at home centers are filters, such as Lowe’s listing for the Culligan single-stage whole-house filtration system (WH-S200-C), which is a sediment filter, not a softener. Culligan’s softeners are sold and installed through dealers. If you want a softener you can pick up and install yourself, see the home-center models in our best water softeners guide.
10-year cost: Culligan vs. DIY vs. direct-sold
These estimates use the same assumptions as our cost guide: a family of four, 300 gallons a day, 15 gpg hardness, salt $100 a year, water $80 a year at $10 per 1,000 gallons, and electricity $5 a year. They are estimates, not quotes.
| Cost | DIY home-center softener | Direct-sold (SpringWell or Matrixx), plumber installed | Culligan, purchased | Culligan, rented |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Softener | $650 | $1,500 | $3,500 (installed) | $5,400 to $12,000 ($45 to $100 a month) |
| Installation | $100 (fittings) | $600 | Included | $0 to $250 |
| Salt (10 years) | $1,000 | $1,000 | $1,000 | $0 to $1,000 (sometimes included) |
| Water (10 years) | $800 | $800 | $800 | $800 |
| Electricity (10 years) | $50 | $50 | $50 | $50 |
| Resin and parts | $300 | $375 | Covered by warranty and service | Included |
| Service plan | $0 | $0 | $2,000 ($200 a year) | Included |
| 10-year total | About $2,900 | About $4,325 | About $7,350 | About $6,250 to $14,100 |
Two things can move the Culligan numbers a lot. Salt delivery at Modernize’s $240 to $600 a year would add $1,400 to $5,000 over 10 years compared with buying salt yourself. A $50 to $70 monthly plan instead of our $200 a year would add roughly $4,000 to $6,400. On the other side, an efficient Smart HE with Aqua-Sensor may use less salt and water than our baseline.
The direct-sold column reflects current list prices: SpringWell’s salt-based softener starts at $1,512, and the US Water Systems Matrixx runs about $1,296 to $1,751 depending on flow rate, with a lifetime tank and resin warranty and 10 years on the valve. Note that US Water Systems describes the Matrixx valve as WQA Gold Seal certified, which is a component listing, not a system-level NSF/ANSI 44 certification like Culligan’s Smart HE. If you’d rather install it yourself, a Fleck 5600SXT kit runs about $800 to $1,200. Our SpringWell water softener review covers that brand in detail.

What Culligan customers praise and complain about
Because each dealer is a separate business, experiences vary by location. Culligan’s ConsumerAffairs page showed an average of 3.0 out of 5 from 560 reviews when it was updated on October 27, 2026. Individual dealers also have their own BBB profiles, with their own complaint records.
Common complaint themes on ConsumerAffairs include sales pressure toward expensive systems, long or unclear rental contracts that were hard to cancel, slow equipment removal, bills higher than quoted, service-call fees, missed appointments and missed salt deliveries. Praise tends to focus on specific local technicians, salespeople and delivery drivers who were prompt and knowledgeable, and on good results from the equipment itself. On BBB, complaints filed against one Minnesota dealer alleged late filter changes and promised rebates that weren’t paid.

Who should buy Culligan (and who shouldn’t)
Culligan makes sense if you want one company to test, install, maintain and deliver salt, you have complex water (iron, sulfur, chlorine plus hardness) and want a local pro to sort it out, or you’re renting a home and want a monthly rental you can end when you move. Check that your local dealer has a solid service record first.
Skip Culligan if you’re comfortable with a basic plumbing job or hiring a plumber, your water is simple city water with moderate hardness, or you plan to stay put for many years. In those cases a direct-sold or home-center softener does the same job for thousands less. Size it with our water softener size calculator first.
How to get a fair Culligan quote
- Know your hardness first. Check your utility’s water quality report or test it yourself so you can judge the dealer’s results.
- Get an itemized quote. Ask for the model name, resin tank size, grain capacity and the price of each add-on separately.
- Ask for the certification. Confirm the exact model is certified to NSF/ANSI 44 and get its rated salt efficiency.
- Get the warranty in writing. Note which parts are covered for how long, and whether labor is included.
- For rentals: get the monthly price after any promo, minimum term, early-cancellation fee, removal fee and annual price increases.
- Price salt and service separately. Compare delivery fees and plan costs with doing it yourself.
- Get competing quotes. Compare with another dealer brand like Kinetico and with direct-sold systems. See our Kinetico water softener review.
- Don’t sign the same day. If you do sign at home, remember the three-business-day cooling-off period.
FAQ
How much does a Culligan water softener cost per month?
Rentals run about $25 to $100 a month, according to Modernize. Advertised dealer starting prices we found were $32 to $55 a month, sometimes with an install fee, and customers have reported paying close to $100 with salt delivery and service included. Promotional rates, like Culligan’s $9.95 for the first three months, rise after the promo ends.
Is it cheaper to rent or buy a Culligan softener?
Buying is usually cheaper if you stay more than a few years. In our 10-year example, a purchased Culligan costs about $7,350 including a service plan, while renting costs about $6,250 to $14,100 depending on the monthly rate and whether salt is included.
Does Culligan include installation in the price?
Usually, yes. Modernize says professional installation is required and generally included in the quote, though some dealers charge a separate fee with rentals (one listed $249), and local permits can add $100 to $200.
Is a Culligan water softener worth the money?
It can be if you value full-service convenience and have a reliable local dealer. On equipment alone, certified direct-sold and home-center softeners remove hardness for far less, so compare quotes with the options in our best water softeners guide before you sign.
Can I cancel a Culligan contract?
For purchases, Culligan advertises a 30-day satisfaction guarantee at participating dealers, and the FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule generally lets you cancel a covered in-home sale by midnight of the third business day. Rental terms and early-cancellation fees are set by each dealer, so read the contract before signing.
