Short answer: Aquasana’s best buys are its certified drinking water filters. The Claryum 3-Stage under-sink filter ($174.99 on sale) is WQA certified for lead and PFOA/PFOS, and the SmartFlow RO ($239.99 on sale) is WQA certified to NSF/ANSI 58 with a 90% fluoride claim. For the whole house, the Rhino ($999 on sale) is a fair price for a 1,000,000-gallon carbon tank, but it’s only “tested to” NSF/ANSI 42. HealthShield ($2,898 on sale) is the one to get for whole-house PFAS, and the SimplySoft softener (from about $849) is certified to NSF/ANSI 44. Skip the shower filter and the Salt-Free Conditioner unless you accept tested-only claims. Weighing a whole-house system? Read our SpringWell vs. Aquasana comparison too.

We didn’t install or test Aquasana products. This review is by the numbers: which claims are backed by a certifier listing, capacity and filter life, yearly filter cost, warranty and return terms, price and the pattern of public customer feedback. Prices come from Aquasana’s site and retailers as of late October 2026.

Who owns Aquasana?

A. O. Smith, the Milwaukee water heater maker, bought Aquasana from private equity firm L Catterton on August 8, 2016, for $87 million in cash. Aquasana’s executive team is in Austin, Texas, with customer service and operations in Haltom City, Texas. Aquasana sells direct and through retailers such as Amazon, Home Depot and Walmart.

Certified vs. tested: read Aquasana’s labels closely

Aquasana uses two kinds of wording. “WQA certified” or “IAPMO certified” means an accredited body tested the product and keeps it on a public listing. “Independently tested to” means a lab ran a test, with no ongoing listing. NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 cover only safe, low-lead materials, not what a filter removes.

Aquasana’s certified products are its drinking water filters (Claryum, SmartFlow, Clean Water Machine), HealthShield and SimplySoft. Its best-known product, the Rhino, plus the Salt-Free Conditioner and the shower filter, rest on tested-only claims.

Rhino whole-house filters

Rhino. The base Rhino is $999 on sale against a $1,998 “MSRP.” It pairs a 20-inch sediment pre-filter, a carbon and KDF tank rated for 1,000,000 gallons or 10 years, and a post-filter. Rated flow is 7 gpm (14.6 gpm peak). Aquasana says it’s “independently tested to NSF/ANSI Standard 42” for up to 97% chlorine reduction; the tank is WQA certified only to NSF/ANSI 61.

The tank is cheap to own per year, but the cartridges aren’t. The standard pre-filter changes every 2 months and the post-filter every 6. A bundle of three pre-filters and one post-filter is $73.49 ($62.47 on subscription), or about $125 to $147 a year. Aquasana’s Low Maintenance Pre-Filter lasts 6 months and was a free upgrade on the Rhino page in October 2026. A replacement tank after 10 years was $949 on sale. Run your own numbers in our cost calculator.

Rhino Chloramines. If your utility uses chloramine, buy this version. Aquasana says it’s tested to NSF/ANSI 42 for up to 83% chloramine reduction, again tested, not certified.

Rhino Max Flow. $1,399 on sale with 14 gpm rated flow and the same 10-year warranty, for larger homes with several bathrooms.

Rhino Well Water with UV. $1,749 on sale ($3,498 MSRP). The carbon and KDF tank is rated for 500,000 gallons or 5 years, and the UV unit is certified to NSF/ANSI 55 Class B, which is supplemental treatment for water already considered safe. The UV needs iron under 0.3 ppm and manganese under 0.05 ppm, so it isn’t an iron filter. Warranty is 5 years. See our best water filter for well water guide if you have iron or sulfur.

For a head-to-head with SpringWell’s CF, which has higher flow and a lifetime warranty but no performance certification, see SpringWell vs. Aquasana.

HealthShield: the certified PFAS option

HealthShield is Aquasana’s strongest whole-house product on paper. Aquasana says it’s WQA tested and certified to NSF/ANSI 53, 401 and CSA B483.1, with 99.9% reduction of five PFAS (PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS and PFHpA) to below 4 parts per trillion, plus VOCs. Its chlorine and chloramine claims are internally tested only.

The trade-offs are big. It costs $2,898 on sale ($5,796 list), the tank lasts about 2 years or 165,000 gallons, and a replacement tank is $1,749 on sale. That’s roughly $875 a year before pre-filters. Rated flow is 5.7 gpm (11.2 peak) and the warranty is 2 years. If PFAS is your concern only for drinking water, a Claryum or SmartFlow costs a fraction as much. Compare more in our best whole-house water filters.

SimplySoft and the Salt-Free Water Conditioner

SimplySoft is a salt-based ion-exchange softener, not a salt-free system. Aquasana says it’s IAPMO certified to NSF/ANSI 44 for hardness reduction and to CSA B483.1. The 60,000-grain model was $1,149 on sale in October 2026; the 40,000-grain model was $849 when last recorded in August. Warranty is 5 years on the valve and 10 on the tanks. Aquasana recommends professional installation, and it needs an outlet and a drain. Size it with our softener size calculator and compare it with our best water softeners.

The Salt-Free Water Conditioner uses scale control media rated for 1,000,000 gallons or 10 years. It’s about $879 on its own, or less as a Rhino add-on; the Rhino page showed a $774 add-on price in late October 2026. It’s limited to water under 15 grains per gallon (convert with our hardness converter), and Aquasana’s “independently tested” scale claim names no lab or standard. It reduces scale; it doesn’t soften. See our best salt-free water softeners.

Drinking water: Claryum, SmartFlow and Clean Water Machine

Claryum 3-Stage. Our top under-sink pick. WQA certifies it to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, including lead, mercury, cysts, VOCs and PFOA/PFOS, plus chlorine and chloramine. It comes with a dedicated faucet and costs $174.99 on sale ($349.99 list). Filters last 600 gallons or 6 months at $83.99 a set, about $168 a year ($143 on subscription). Flow is a slow 0.5 gpm.

Claryum Direct Connect. One cartridge feeds your existing cold tap at 1.5 gpm, so there’s no new faucet to install. Aquasana says it’s IAPMO certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (including the PFOA/PFOS protocol) and 401. It’s $124.99 on sale. The 784-gallon cartridge ($91.99, $78.19 on subscription) still needs changing every 6 months, about $156 to $184 a year.

SmartFlow RO. A 4-stage tank RO with a remineralizer and a 3.2-gallon tank. Aquasana says it’s WQA tested and certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (including P473), 58, 401 and CSA B483.1, with 90% fluoride and 96% arsenic reduction. It was $239.99 on sale ($479.99 MSRP) in late October 2026, up from $199.99 earlier in the year, and it now carries a 2-year warranty. Filters are the catch: we tallied about $310 a year at list prices, or about $263 on subscription. Compare it in our best reverse osmosis systems. Sold direct and at Walmart; we saw only replacement filters on Amazon.

Clean Water Machine. A countertop gravity dispenser (AQ-CWM2) that WQA lists under NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401, including lead and PFOA/PFOS. List is $399.99, but it usually sells for about $200. Filters last 300 gallons or 6 months at $73.49 a two-pack ($62.47 on subscription), roughly 10 to 12 cents a gallon. See our best countertop water filters. Sold direct and at Walmart.

Shower filters

The AQ-4100 pairs coconut shell carbon with KDF. Aquasana says it’s “independently tested to NSF/ANSI Standard 177” and publishes 91.6% average free chlorine reduction over 10,000 gallons, but it isn’t on an NSF, WQA or IAPMO listing. Walmart had the showerhead version for $79.99, and cartridges cost $62.99 ($53.54 on subscription) every 6 months, so about $107 to $126 a year. That’s high next to certified options in our best shower filters.

Pricing: the permanent 50% sale

Almost every Aquasana system shows an “MSRP” that’s exactly double the sale price, and the “50% off” banner runs most of the year. Treat the sale price as the real price. Replacement filters are usually excluded from the sale; the Water for Life subscription takes about 15% off and ships filters on schedule.

Warranty and returns

Warranties vary a lot by product: 10 years on the Rhino, Max Flow and Salt-Free Conditioner, 5 years on Rhino Well, 5 and 10 years on SimplySoft (valve and tanks), 2 years on HealthShield and SmartFlow, and 1 year on Claryum. All are limited warranties with conditions, so read the warranty PDF for your model before you install.

The 90-day satisfaction guarantee covers only purchases made directly from Aquasana, and the 90 days start on the order date, not the install date. You must get a return authorization code, send back the entire system with every part, pay return shipping and insurance, and get it to Aquasana within 21 days of authorization. Buy at a retailer and you’re under that retailer’s policy instead.

Customer service and complaint themes

Aquasana’s public record is mixed. On Trustpilot it rated 1.5 out of 5 from 173 reviews in October 2026, with 78% one-star. Common themes there are leaks at housings and fittings (some with water damage), hard-to-reach or unhelpful support, denied warranty claims, and trouble canceling Water for Life auto-shipments. Aquasana replies to nearly all negative reviews, usually within 48 hours.

Post-purchase surveys look better. Bizrate showed 8.8 out of 10 from about 1,360 verified post-delivery reviews in late October 2026, with expensive replacement filters and the returns process as the lowest-scoring areas. TapWaterData recorded the Rhino EQ-1000 at 4.2 out of 5 from 689 Amazon reviews in August 2026, with leaks the most frequent complaint.

Aquasana pros and cons

Who should buy Aquasana, and who shouldn’t

Buy it if you want a certified under-sink filter or RO from a large company, you’re on city water and want a long-life whole-house tank at a moderate price, or PFAS is a specific concern and you can afford HealthShield.

Skip it if you have well water with iron, manganese or sulfur (look at an oxidation filter instead), your home needs more than 7 gpm and Max Flow is over budget, your hardness is above 15 gpg and you were eyeing the salt-free conditioner, or you want the lowest possible yearly filter costs. Dealer brands like Culligan and Kinetico bundle install and service but cost more; see our Culligan cost guide and softener cost guide.

Verdict: what to buy and what to skip

FAQ

Is Aquasana a good brand?

For drinking water filters, yes: the Claryum, SmartFlow and Clean Water Machine carry WQA or IAPMO certifications at fair sale prices. Its whole-house Rhino is decent value but only tested to NSF/ANSI 42, and customer service complaints are common.

Is the Aquasana Rhino NSF certified?

Not for performance. Aquasana says the Rhino is independently tested to NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine, and the tank is WQA certified only to NSF/ANSI 61 for material safety. HealthShield is the Aquasana whole-house system with performance certification.

Who makes Aquasana?

A. O. Smith, the water heater company, which bought Aquasana in August 2016 for $87 million. Aquasana is still run from Austin, Texas.

Is Aquasana always 50% off?

Nearly. Aquasana lists an MSRP that’s double its usual price and advertises 50% off most of the year, so the sale price is effectively the normal price.

Can I return an Aquasana system after installing it?

If you bought it directly from Aquasana, you have 90 days from the order date to return the complete system with all parts, and you pay return shipping. Retailer purchases follow the retailer’s own policy.
