Water Softener Cost Calculator

A water softener costs far more over its life than the price on the box. Salt, regeneration water, power and an eventual resin change add up, and dealer service plans or rental fees can double the total. Enter your household size, water hardness and local prices below to compare five common ways to get a softener over 10 years, or any number of years you choose. Every price is editable, so you can plug in real quotes.

Softeners certified to NSF/ANSI 44 for efficiency remove at least 3,350 grains per pound. Older timer-based units often get about 2,500.

How this calculator works

The running costs are the same for every option, because the same household softens the same water no matter how the softener was bought. Here is the math, step by step:

For each of the five options, we then add up:

The cheapest option is highlighted. The calculator doesn’t include repairs, financing, sales tax, potassium chloride (which costs several times more than sodium chloride salt) or any salt delivery a rental plan might include.

What the defaults mean

The starting values describe a typical family of four on hard city water. With them, the softener removes 4,500 grains a day, or about 1.64 million grains a year. That takes about 469 pounds of salt (11.7 bags, about $94) and 8,200 gallons of regeneration water (about $82) a year. Those figures match the example in our water softener cost guide.

The five ways to buy start from typical prices in our cost research:

With every default in place, the home-center DIY softener costs about $2,960 over 10 years, the online kit about $3,510, the premium softener about $4,010, renting about $6,610 and the dealer purchase about $7,610. Buying almost always beats renting if you stay put for more than a couple of years. Hardness and water use drive the running costs: double either one and the salt and water bills roughly double too.
